Everything a skeptic should ask
Do I need my own AI subscription?+
For real work, yes — cats run on the Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, or Hermes you already have, or on cheap open models through your own OpenRouter account. The ambient cat life (moods, chatter, island decorating) runs on free background models out of the box. We never bill for compute.
Is my code safe?+
GPU Cats is local-first. Your agents, terminals, code, and memories live on your Mac. Voice is fully local too — Whisper for ears, Kokoro for the voice. No telemetry.
Is this a toy or a tool?+
Both, on purpose. The cats are real agent sessions doing real work — the same orchestration machinery you would find in serious multi-agent platforms is running underneath. The difference is you watch cats instead of dashboards.
What platforms?+
macOS first, during beta. Windows and Linux are on the roadmap after launch.
What is Command Mode?+
The full control room for power users: visual workflow editor, plans board, heartbeat scheduling, connections to Telegram and more. It ships hidden by default — the cats run all of it for you — and can be flipped on when you want the knobs.
Gacha... with real money?+
The gacha is played with in-app coins your cats earn. Paid species packs are optional cosmetic content — art, not power, and never inference. No loot-box pressure: pity is generous and drop rates are shown.
Will it melt my laptop?+
No. It is native C++ with Skia rendering — not an Electron wrapper — and the world idles politely in the background. Voice models load once and run locally. If you can run your builds, you can run the island.
Does it mess with my existing setup?+
No. Each cat is a real CLI session you can pop open, and nothing about your dotfiles, terminals, or workflow changes. Your normal terminal keeps working right alongside it.
Agents running overnight — what about my usage limits?+
Real work runs on the subscription you already have, exactly as if you had typed it yourself — you set the goals, so you set the spend. The ambient cat life (moods, chatter, decorating) runs on free background models and costs you nothing.
Is it safe to let them run unattended?+
Long-running work happens in isolated git worktrees with review gates and checkpoints — nothing merges without you. Worst case, you wake up to a branch you delete, not a main you mourn.
Can I turn the cute off?+
You can mute the voice, calm the animations, and run it as a quiet, glanceable status world. The charm is a dial, not a mandate.
I already use tmux / Conductor / claude-squad. Why switch?+
You don’t switch — GPU Cats sits on top of the same sessions you already run. Keep your muscle memory; the cats just make the fleet visible, memorable, and a little alive.
